2 Corinthians 12:7 – 9 Amplified Bible “Because of the surpassing greatness and extraordinary nature of the revelations [which I received from God], for this reason, to keep me from thinking of myself as important, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan, to torment and harass me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might leave me; but He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.” Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me.”
This thorn in the flesh was some great trouble, or some great temptation. Paul mentions that it was a messenger of Satan that harassed and tormented him. Paul was very much like us, wasn’t he? We all have something that is a thorn in our flesh! Something that tends to keep us humble before the Lord.
Experiencing success in life and/or ministry is something that could be used by the enemy to cause us to think more of ourselves than we should. Afterall, God gives us the ability to do what we do each day. This ‘thorn’ prevented Paul’s third heaven experience from him being lifted above measure, on account of the visions and revelations he had. It also displayed God’s foreknowledge of Paul’s ego. We all know that ego is edging God out! When God does not take away our troubles and temptations, He gives grace to us, and we have no reason to complain.
When we are weak in ourselves, then we are strong in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; when we feel that we are weak in ourselves, then we go to Christ, receive strength from him, and enjoy most the supplies of Divine strength and grace. This does not give license to sin or to indulge in a carefree state of living. We must always be mindful of Gods holiness, and we are admonished by the Lord to live likewise.
We serve a wonderful and mighty Counselor that is forging a masterpiece in you and I. What He has started, He will finish. Be steadfast in Christ and allow Him to guide each step understanding that His strength is being perfected in us for His glory.
