Matthew 12:35, 36, 37 “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
A person cannot prove or display inner belief if there are no outward actions to back it up. There is no such thing as invisible faith! True faith becomes visible to others through our deeds through obedience to God and His holy Word. This could be termed proven belief! This verse is part of a larger passage in James 2:14-26 explaining that faith without action is dead.
James 2:18 “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
One definition of “Idle Word” could be careless speaking. The original Greek word (argos) means inactive, lazy, or unprofitable. It refers to words spoken lightly, without thought, without purpose or Thoughtless remarks. Jesus explains in the surrounding verses (Matthew 12:34–37) that speech reflects what is truly inside a person’s heart. Words show a person’s true character and condition of the heart. Jesus states that a person’s words will be used to justify or condemn them, proving whether their faith and heart are genuine. This teaching encourages people to speak with kindness and wisdom rather than using harmful or empty language. Daily awareness in our daily living.
Too often we tend to harden our hearts to protect ourselves, but this is God’s job! A hardened heart is an emotional or spiritual state where a person becomes cold, numb, and resistant to empathy, growth, or outside guidance. There are emotional and relational signs to a cold, hardened heart.
Flat emotions: You feel little to no joy, sadness, celebration, or crying.
Frequent dismissal: You regularly say “I don’t care” about people, outcomes, or disappointments.
Mechanical living: Meaningful activities feel robotic, empty, or purely mechanical.
Growing cynicism: You automatically assume the worst about others and lack trust or hope.
Isolation: You withdraw from people, avoiding accountability or close connections.
As there are emotional and relational signs there are also spiritual and behavioral signs as well!
Unrepentant attitude: You make excuses for wrong actions instead of taking responsibility or seeking change.
Pride and stubbornness: You resist correction, feedback, or direction from others.
Lack of compassion: You stop caring about the needs or suffering of people around you.
Resentment: You hold onto bitterness and keep track of past hurts.
Most people agree that simply worrying or questioning whether your heart is hardened is a sign that it is not yet fully dead, because a truly hardened heart feels no concern at all. Yes, we have a hope in Christ alone! Go love on purpose in Jesus’ name.
