The Name of the Lord

Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain”

Those that confess Christ as ‘Savior’ are held to a high standard than that of the world. The world’s standard is one that slides and adjusts with each passing year or at least each generation. Do as you please if it doesn’t hurt another unjustly. Do as thou wilt never worked and will never work. God’s standard is based on His holiness and holy precepts. What was described as sin or unholy 2000 years ago is still sin and unholy today and this is a fact that needs no counsel. It is immutable.

This world cries out loud for God without any real plea for Him. Think of it, when we cry out for God as a release of grief, despair, anger, or other emotion, we use His name in vain!  When we cry out to God, all of heaven awaits what is spoken next!  For instance, if we say, “God help me in my health or bad situation.” He responds. He will not respond to, “Oh God.” We also erroneously think that saying certain ‘bad words’ is taking His name in vain. This is not the case as well. This is just a nasty mouth unable to properly communicate to another!

Taking the Lord’s name in vain is professing to be one that follows Christ in thought, deed, and voice while living like anyone in the world with no variance. Let me explain it this way. When I married my wife I said, ‘I do’ and she said ‘I do’ striking a holy covenant. Let me tell you she did not take my name in vain! She took my name and ran with it! She uses my credit cards and exercises the full use and authority of my name! Understand? When we take the name of Christ or Christian – like Jesus – we are to make full use of His name as well! The Bible teaches us that we are here in this world in His stead…or instead of Him! He is seated at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. He sent His precious Holy Spirit to indwell us and bring to remembrance all He taught.

The Ten Commandments were given primarily to the home and to the family. God gave us the Ten Commandments because of His love for us; every time God says, “Thou shalt not,” He is saying, “Don’t hurt yourself.” Every time God says, “Thou shalt,” He is saying, “Help yourself to happiness.” The Ten Commandments are for our good and for our welfare. God tells us in Exodus 20:7 that we are not to take His name in vain. This infers that we are to take His name in victory and that we are to take His name and the authority that goes with it.

God live in the victory which is ours in Christ Jesus! Love people right into this wonderful kingdom.
